Companies establish safety procedures, preferred workflows, approved equipment, procurement practices, quality standards, and other construction best practices so every project team doesn’t have to determine its own approach from scratch.
The goal isn’t uniformity for its own sake. It’s reducing unnecessary variability.
Every project will still have different owners, sites, schedules, teams, requirements, and field conditions. Standardization focuses instead on activities that happen often enough—and affect performance significantly enough—that developing a consistent approach creates value.
Standardization should give project teams fewer routine problems to solve, not less flexibility to solve the unique problems that actually require their expertise.

In STARC’s recent research with 150 construction leaders, two out of three contractors said most of their projects are delayed, and more than half said typical delays last one to three months or longer. Labor shortages were the leading cause, but the research also identified planning and procurement gaps among the more preventable contributors.

The labor challenge extends well beyond that study. In a 2025 nationwide workforce survey from the Associated General Contractors of America and NCCER, 92% of construction firms that were hiring reported difficulty finding qualified workers, while 45% said worker shortages had delayed projects.
Those pressures make the question of how labor gets used just as important as how much labor is available.
And contractors are responding.
STARC’s project delays research found leading firms engaging procurement earlier, improving coordination between preconstruction and field teams, rethinking how materials, equipment, and jobsite setup are planned, and prioritizing repeatable, standardized approaches across projects.

That doesn’t mean taking decisions away from project teams. It means separating the decisions that genuinely need field judgment from the ones the organization has already learned how to make well.
When a proven approach exists, starting from scratch can add time without adding value.

Project teams have to stay focused on the job in front of them: Is it on schedule? Are we on budget? Are we working safely? Are we delivering the quality the owner expects?

What Makes a Construction Process Worth Standardizing?
Not every construction activity should become a company standard.
The best opportunities are activities where greater consistency can remove meaningful friction without taking away the flexibility project teams need.
A useful place to start is by looking at six characteristics: frequency, repeatability, variability, resource intensity, consequence, and measurability.
The more of these characteristics an activity has, the stronger the case for asking whether a standardized approach could improve construction efficiency.

Start With the Repeat Offenders
Finding those opportunities doesn’t necessarily require the next big construction innovation.
Start with the familiar headaches.
Where do teams routinely lose time waiting for a particular trade or resource? What creates the same coordination problems job after job? What gets purchased, assembled, removed, and purchased again? Where are field teams constantly developing workarounds? Which early-stage activities can hold up everything that follows?
These are the repeat offenders—problems that can become accepted as part of construction because good project teams have learned how to manage around them.
But a problem can be manageable and still be inefficient.
Experienced teams are good at adapting. They re-sequence work, coordinate around constraints, find substitutes, and keep jobs moving. You don’t want to eliminate that ability.
You want to save it for the problems that actually require it.

Temporary construction infrastructure doesn’t get the same attention as the permanent building. But it can directly affect how quickly work starts, how labor gets deployed, how smoothly phases transition, and how construction interacts with everything happening around it.
That infrastructure can include temporary containment, access systems, logistics, protection, temporary spaces, and other systems that enable the permanent work.
Temporary doesn’t mean inconsequential.
That’s particularly true in occupied renovation. In a hospital, airport, data center, office, manufacturing facility, or other active environment, construction has to coexist with whatever the building is there to do.
Temporary infrastructure can therefore affect dust and noise control, access, safety and compliance, phasing, occupant experience, and the facility’s ability to keep operating.
Yet these systems are often treated as project details: figure out what you need, source it, install it, remove it, and do it again on the next job.
For contractors looking for construction process improvement opportunities, that deserves another look.
The question isn’t What do we need on this job?
It’s: Which of these needs show up often enough that we should have a better way to handle them every time?
Temporary Containment: A Standardization Opportunity
Temporary containment is a good example.
On occupied renovation projects, contractors repeatedly need to separate construction activity from surrounding spaces. The configuration changes, but the basic job is familiar:
establish separation
control dust and debris
manage disruption
support applicable safety requirements
adapt as the project moves through phases
remove the barrier when the work is complete
When containment is treated purely as a project-level task, each team has to determine the approach, procure materials, coordinate labor, install the barrier, adapt it, and eventually remove it.
Viewed through a standardization lens, containment becomes something else: a recurring construction process.

How much labor does the approach require? How quickly can work start? What other trades does installation depend on? How easily can containment adapt as phases change? What happens to the materials afterward? Can the same approach work across different project conditions? Can the lessons learned on this job benefit the next one?

Finding a better product isn’t the same as creating a standard.

Is support available when teams need it? Can the organization measure whether it’s actually delivering the expected improvement?
A product can solve a field problem.
A repeatable system makes that solution easier to deploy across teams, projects, and locations.
That requires thinking beyond product performance to procurement, deployment, training, installation practices, reuse or redeployment, support, and measurement.
When those pieces work together, a project win stops being a one-off.
It becomes something the company knows how to repeat.
How to Put Construction Standardization Into Practice
Standardization doesn’t have to begin with a companywide mandate.
Start with a recurring problem. Prove a better approach. Then build from there.
1. Identify the recurring problem
Look across projects, not just at the job in front of you.
Where do the same delays, labor dependencies, coordination problems, costs, or workarounds keep showing up?
The more often the problem repeats, the greater the potential value of solving it systematically.
2. Establish the baseline
Know what the current approach really costs.
Depending on the activity, that can include labor hours, materials, subcontractor dependencies, installation and removal time, waste, schedule impacts, rework, storage, or management attention.
Without a baseline, “better” is mostly an opinion.
3. Test a repeatable alternative
A pilot lets teams evaluate a different approach under real field conditions.
But don’t ask only whether it worked on this project.
Ask whether it can work again.
Can another crew use it? Can it handle different conditions? Is it easy to source and deploy? What needs to be documented, taught, or supported before another project picks it up?
4. Measure what matters
Compare the alternative against the baseline.
Did it reduce labor? Shorten installation time? Remove a dependency? Improve schedule predictability? Reduce waste? Make project phasing easier? Improve safety, compliance, quality, or the owner and occupant experience?
The measures will vary by process.
What matters is knowing whether the improvement is repeatable rather than anecdotal.
5. Make it easy for the next team
A successful pilot isn’t a standard.
Prove it. Document it. Make it easy for the next team to use.
That could mean approved sourcing, standard procedures, training, inventory or deployment plans, internal ownership, performance benchmarks, and a way to capture what teams learn as adoption grows.
The objective isn’t to eliminate field decisions.
It’s to stop making teams repeat decisions the company has already made—and proven.
Better Construction Productivity Starts With What You Stop Reinventing
Construction will always demand adaptability. No standardized process can eliminate the unexpected, and nobody working in the field would believe it could.
But adaptability is most valuable when experienced teams can apply it to the challenges that actually require their judgment—not recurring problems somebody else in the company has already solved.
That’s the opportunity behind construction standardization.
Look across the jobs. Find the repeat offenders. Establish what works. Measure it. Then make the better approach easier to repeat.
